How Botox Ruined Deborah’s Life

When used correctly, Botox can get rid of wrinkles without the need for expensive surgery, unsightly scars or a long recovery time. But in a few cases, it can produce side effects that although temporary, can lead to emotional scars.

One of these side effects is a drooping eyelid or ptosis that can occur if too much Botox is injected or if the toxin is injected in the wrong area. This problem normally happens in one to two percent of patients and can affect one or both eyelids.

“This drooping is a result of the local dissemination of the toxin in the injection site and can be minimized by accurate dosing, as well as proper placement, and keeping the patient in an upright position for three to four hours after injection. If drooping eyelids occur, it is usually minimal and is usually resolved within two weeks,” according to the Dermatology Associates of Atlanta.

In Deborah Townsley’s case, however, this side effect lasted longer than she expected. As a result, she became severely depressed and emotionally devastated. Her sad story is featured on LocateADoc.com.

“I had received Botox injections between my eyebrows for a frown line five times (every 3 – 4 months). I was aware that Botox is a new treatment. However, I didn’t think it was too risky, especially since it gave me the much desired results. Every time I read and signed the consent form which informed me of the risks, I thought they would never happen to me,” she narrated.

While preparing for the Christmas holidays with her kids and grandchildren, the unexpected happened. Four days after receiving the injections, Deborah’s right eyelid started drooping as if she had suffered a stroke. Her doctor said it would disappear in 7 – 10 days or two weeks at the most. He was wrong.

“I set time limits in my mind that surely this will be better by Sunday or by the time they arrive or by the time we get our pictures done or before the talent show. But every time limit came and went with seemingly no improvement. Every night I went to bed, hoping and praying that it would miraculously be better by morning. Every day, I woke up so depressed,” Deborah said.

After two months, nothing changed. The dropping eyelid was still there and Deborah decided she would never have Botox again.

“I was never angry at the doctor – I don’t think he did anything different on that day or anything wrong. The only thing that I was frustrated about (and I did call him several times just to inform him of the outcome) was that he told me very clearly, very emphatically, in the beginning that this would last for two weeks at the most!

“I know that he felt horrible for the mishap. He knew I was devastated as I cried in the office. He knew this was the worst time for something like this to happen. And he wanted to make me feel better – but his false hopes made me feel worse,” she said.

Due to the growing number of people who have suffered due to Botox, manufacturers have developed safe and natural anti-wrinkle remedies. One popular product that is currently making waves is the Rejuvinol AM/PM Botox Alternative Age-Defying System. This two-in-one anti-aging formula combines the nourishing effects of the Rejuvinol morning moisturizer and the muscle-relaxing Rejuvox night cream.
