Cosmetic surgery has become a popular way to turn back the clock on the skin today, with many procedures available to erase fine lines and wrinkles, smooth the skin’s surface and bring a youthful glow back to the complexion. Many of the treatments are low risk, non-invasive and highly effective, which explains the popularity of cosmetic surgery in the anti-aging arena. However, before considering any cosmetic treatment, it is important to get all the facts.

Botox is the cosmetic form of a toxin that is also found in botulism. However, when it is administered in small doses under the careful supervision of a physician, it can effectively treat a variety of conditions, including deep wrinkles in the skin. The procedure has been around since 1980, when it was initially used to treat medical conditions like lazy eye and uncontrolled blinking. Since it was approved for cosmetic use in 1987, it has also been found to be an effective treatment for excessive sweating, twitching muscles and migraine headaches, in addition to working well in the war on wrinkles.

As a cosmetic treatment, Botox is primarily used to smooth the worry and frown lines between the brow on the forehead. Botox treatment can also be used to treat other forehead lines and crow’s feet around the eyes safely and effectively. Some have even seen success on the lines around the neck that are known as “turkey” lines. This method works by injecting the solution into the area of the wrinkle, where it can go to work paralyzing the muscles that are responsible for the formation of the lines in the first place. When these muscles are paralyzed, the lines automatically disappear, leaving smoother, younger looking skin in its place.

There are few risks involved with Botox treatment, but possible side effects might include pain or bruising around the injection site. Some patients walk out of treatment with a mild headache and others might experience a temporary incidence of a droopy eye, especially if the treatment was administered in that area. Patients can usually apply makeup right after the treatment is complete, although pressing the area should be avoided. Full results are usually seen within a few days after treatment, since the toxin doesn’t usually take effect until three to seven days after the procedure is done.

The main catch to Botox is that one session will not provide permanent results. The maker of this product recommends that patients repeat sessions every four months to keep the results going strong. If treatment is suspended for any reason, the lines will return and the process will need to be started all over again. While some believe that the commitment to this procedure is worth the stellar results that they enjoy, it is certainly a commitment of time and money that should be weighed carefully before the first treatment is scheduled. Most insurance companies will not cover the cost of cosmetic procedures like this, leaving patients to foot the rather large bill on their own. However, positive results may easily keep patients coming back for more when they see how much younger they can look with regular treatment sessions.
